Key Points:
New recommendations have been released by a consensus group of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) and the American Diabetes Association (ADA) on the treatment of hospitalized patients with high blood glucose levels, recommending revised glucose targets of 140-180 mg/dL in the ICU setting, and between 100-180 mg/dL for most patients admitted to general medical-surgical wards. Greater benefit may be realized at the lower end of this range. Although strong evidence is lacking, somewhat lower glucose targets may be appropriate in selected patients. Targets less than 110 mg/dL, however, are not recommended.
